Recently, the CFC High Toughness Ultra-thin Friction Course-Qingchun Tunnel Asphalt Pavement Improvement Project was awarded the 2024 International Association of Municipal Engineering (China Award). The Qingchun Tunnel is under the jurisdiction of Hangzhou Urban Construction and Development Group, and the thin-layer covering is jointly constructed by Hangzhou Road and Bridge Group and Central Fortune Creation Technology Group Co.,Ltd.
The International Association of Municipal Engineering (China Award) aims to recognize projects that meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, bring outstanding results to society, improve service levels, and have a positive impact on society. This award is strictly evaluated and assessed by the International Federation of Municipal Engineering (IFME) for municipal infrastructure projects such as road construction, bridge construction, road maintenance, streetlight facilities, and urban lighting in China.
In this year's International Association of Municipal Engineering (China Award), as the first selection activity, a total of 9 award-winning projects were ultimately selected. The Qingchun Tunnel Asphalt Pavement Improvement (High Resilience Ultra Thin Wear Layer Asphalt Pavement) project has been shortlisted after fierce competition.

Project Background
The Qingchun Tunnel is located at the bottom of the Qiantang River in the southeast of Hangzhou City, with a total length of 4180 meters. It connects Qingchun East Road in Shangcheng District to Shixin North Road in Xiaoshan District, and connects the urban center of Qianjiang New City Qianjiang Century City. It is the first urban infrastructure project in Hangzhou to be constructed using the BOT model of "investment, construction, operation, and transfer". It is also the first cross river tunnel that crosses the Qiantang River and is known as the "First Tunnel of Qianjiang". Since its opening on December 28, 2010, the Qingchun Tunnel has had an average daily traffic volume of over 50000 vehicles and has always played an important role as the main artery of cross river transportation.

With the increase of service life, the aging and disease problems of the asphalt surface layer in Qingchun Tunnel have become increasingly prominent, seriously affecting the comfort and efficiency of driving. The aging of asphalt materials leads to frequent repairs of potholes and mesh cracks in the later stage, while the loss of fine aggregates exacerbates the driving noise on the road surface. The heavy traffic flow has accelerated the deterioration of the anti-skid performance of the road surface, and vehicle rear end accidents occur frequently, exacerbating congestion. The traffic operation of Qingchun Tunnel is facing unprecedented severe pressure.

CFC Innovation Empowers Qingchun Tunnel with a New Look

In order to improve the quality of the Qingchun Tunnel pavement, Hangzhou Qingchun Guojiang Tunnel Co., Ltd. actively organized extensive research. Based on strict research and rigorous testing (implemented as a demonstration section in January 2022), a high toughness ultra-thin asphalt wear layer was ultimately adopted as the implementation plan for improving the quality and efficiency of the tunnel pavement. Implemented by Hangzhou Road and Bridge Group in collaboration with Huayun Tongda (Zhejiang) Transportation Technology Co., Ltd.

On April 21-28, 2022, after 8 days, the Qingchun Tunnel completed the full section high toughness ultra-thin wear layer covering, with a total implementation area of nearly 70000 square meters. The most advanced synchronous paving technology was adopted during the construction process, greatly improving the construction efficiency. After adding a high toughness and ultra-thin asphalt wear layer, the functionality and quality of the Qingchun Tunnel pavement have been greatly improved. According to the monitoring center of the Qingchun Cross River Tunnel Management Center, since 2022, the tunnel traffic rear end collision rate has decreased by an average of 63.7% compared to before 2021, and driving safety has significantly improved. At the same time, the driving noise inside the tunnel has been reduced by more than 7 decibels compared to before the renovation, and the driving comfort has achieved a quiet effect. Until now, there have been no cracks, potholes, peeling or other defects on the road surface, maintaining a "zero repair" status. Not only has it comprehensively optimized the driving experience for citizens and created a good livable environment for surrounding residents, but it has also greatly reduced maintenance costs and achieved comprehensive improvement in economic, social, and environmental benefits.

This award from the International Association of Municipal Engineering (China Award) not only demonstrates the outstanding achievements of Huayun Tongda in technological innovation, engineering quality control, and environmental protection concept practice, but also lays a solid foundation for the company to use new materials and technologies to promote innovative development in the field of international municipal roads. In the future, Huayun Tongda will continue to deepen its research and technological innovation in the field of road materials, continuously improve the level of refinement and intelligence in road construction and maintenance, inject strong momentum into empowering the high-quality and sustainable development of the municipal road industry, and continue to make the strongest voice of China's road technology in the international road industry development wave.
